Terry Ellen Halmes Brave passed away at her home in Helena on September 24th due to complications from diabetes. She was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 4. The doctor told her parents she would not live beyond 50. She was quite proud that she proved them wrong.
Terry was born November 14, 1950 to Ray and Beth Halmes in Great Falls, Montana. She graduated from Great Falls High School in 1969 and then attended the University of Montana in accounting. Her career included accountant work for government agencies and private businesses, including the Shack Cafe in Missoula for 10 years. Terry and her husband Dave Smail owned and operated the Northwind Gallery in Missoula for 8 years, specializing in Native American artists and their work.
Although she experienced many challenges in her life, Terry maintained a positive outlook, always with a smile and ever-present giggle. She never gave up.
Terry was preceded in death by her parents, sister Penny Halmes Walker, son Brad Brave and her first husband Darryl Brave.
She is survived by her best friend and loving husband Dave Smail, Helena; son, Tim Williams, Billings; siblings Rick Halmes, Billings, Jan Halmes, Missoula and Nona Coughlan, Belt.
A celebration of Terry's life will be held at a later date. Simple Cremation Montana has assisted the family.
