Scottie Abbott Obituary

Scottie Abbott, 85, passed away peacefully at home in Helena, on June 16, 2022, with his wife and best friend of 43 years by his side. Scottie loved traveling (driving), fishing, reading, cooking, animals, playing bunco and making people laugh. However, most of all, he loved his family.

Scottie was born on December 15, 1936, in Stilwell, Oklahoma, to the late Fisher and Mavis (Davenport) Abbott. He was the middle of three kids. At age 3, his family moved to Arkansas, then three years later to Missouri, settling down in Westwood, CA, just days before his 13th birthday. He graduated from Westwood High in 1955. He remained in California for most of his years, living in Redding, Anderson, Citrus Heights, West Sacramento, and Sacramento. In June 2020, he moved one last time to Helena, Montana.

Scottie was a hard worker his whole life. His first job was picking cotton with his family at age eight, and he worked various jobs while attending grade school. After graduating from high school, Scottie worked for a few lumber yards. In 1962, he went to work for Bert McDowell (which became United Grocers and then Fleming Foods). After 34 years and 1.8 million accident-free miles, he retired.

Scottie had a kind-gentle spirit. Upon meeting him, you’d feel like you’ve known him a lifetime. He always said “good mornin” regardless of the time of day. On long road trips with his grandsons, he would honk and wave at random drivers just to hear them laugh, a tradition they have carried on with their families. Scottie loved spending time with his family, whether going to a River Cats game, traveling in their RV, or fishing off the bank. He enjoyed BBQs and playing games with all the grandkids. Scottie was truly “one of the good ones” and will be missed by the many friends he called family.

Scottie is survived by his wife, Marilyn. Three children: Sharyl Gravelle (Bill Garcia), Lenette (Matthew) Egan, and Brian (Cindie) Abbott, plus a bonus daughter Sandy Werlinger. Six grandchildren: Terren (Blythe) Gravelle, Christina Abbott, Jacey (Mike) McElroy, Jessica (Jesse) Estrada, Andrew (Autumn) McGuffey, and Joshua (Elena) Egan. Fourteen great-grandchildren: Edna, Rudy, Kya, Napela, Kalea, Kaylea, Maria, Angel, Jesse Jr, Blaine, Lena, Lora, Oaklie, and one on the way. One great-great-grandbaby: Shaniya! His brother, Jerry Abbott, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Scottie is preceded in death by his parents, Fisher and Mavis Abbott, his son, Keith Abbott, his sister, Lulabelle “Lou” Abbott Dickson, and numerous late family members.

The family would like to thank St. Peters Hospital’s In-home Hospice for the care they gave Scottie during his last months.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 8, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Helena. A reception will follow downstairs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Scottie's name to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society.

A celebration of life will be held in Sacramento at a future date.
