Ronnie Ray Rieger, 81, passed away on March 11th, 2023 with his family at his side. Ronnie was born on May 24, 1941 to Edwin & Emilie (Singer) Rieger. Ronnie was raised on the Rieger Ranch outside of Plevna, Montana. Life around the ranch was always busy and would become even busier as his six siblings joined the family. Ronnie graduated from Plevna High School and joined the Air Force soon after. He spoke very fondly of his time in the Azores. When he was stationed in Louisiana he met and married his first wife, Vera. To that union, a daughter was born, Rhonda. After discharge and a divorce, Ronnie made his way back to Montana where he moved through a plethora of jobs. He often joked, he was a Jack of all trades, master of none. Life led him to buy a semi truck with his friend and business partner, Pete. They were based out of Missoula, MT where he met his future wife Robin. They were married in Columbia Falls, MT and Shawna was born soon after. They joined Ronnie on the road and the three of them lived and worked out of the truck until Sarah was born. Two children were too much for a small cab, so the truck was retired and the family settled in Baker, MT. Ron worked in the oil fields, helped his brother and Dad on the ranch, and was happy to be around family again. During one of those days on the ranch a freak car accident crushed his ankle. Not to be defeated, it was time to pivot again. Ronnie decided to go to college to obtain an Engineering degree, and so he packed up the family and off to Bozeman, MT they went. God put Ronnie where he needed to be, because less than two years later after a grueling round of tests and near-death experiences, Ronnie was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Understanding that a “typical” career was likely not in the cards for him, Ronnie switched majors to his true love, Art. Ten years after he started college Ronnie proudly graduated with his bachelor’s in fine arts from Montana State University. Being an artist truly defined who Ronnie was and while he never received fame and fortune, he loved painting, sculpting and jewelry making. Once he was able, Ronnie rejoined the work force and worked for several businesses around town, including the VA center. It was here that Ronnie embraced his Air Force past and embodied being a veteran. He was always there for a conversation, a listening ear, and some gentle steering. He rarely gave advice, but rather would let you talk it out until you came to the answer on your own. Over the years, Ron established and cultivated relationships with many groups including the Gem & Mineral Club, the art community and senior singles group. He was also proud to mentor his nieces and nephews that would come to attend his Alma Mater. Though his life had many health obstacles and personal challenges, Ronnie faced each one with perseverance while maintaining compassion towards others.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Ed & Millie Rieger, his brother Donnie, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his three children, Rhonda (Tony) Bennett, Shawna (Dustin) Matosich, and Sarah (Justin Fortune) Rieger; 3 grandchildren, Emilie Bennett, Sheyanne & Gavin Matosich; 2 bonus grandchildren, Mikey and Rosalyn; ex-wives Vera & Robin, Sharon (Bill) Ware, Tom (Jackie) Rieger, Roy (Berdie) Rieger, Maralee (Bart) Burdick, Tanya (Brad) Dorvall; Sister’s In Law, Eileen Rieger (Donnie) and Rosanne Rieger; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.
