Glenda Pickett Obituary

Glenda was born in Long Beach, California on April 8, 1941, as the first child of the late Glenn and Mary Pickett.  She was baptized at Downey, California.  Glenda graduated from Western Senior High School in Anaheim, California in 1961.  She then went on to receive her Associate of Arts Degree from the Fullerton Junior College in Fullerton, California.

Glenda was employed at J. J. Newberry Department Store after college.  She worked for 31 years as a Field Agent for the Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce of the Federal Government in Suitland, Maryland. She retired in 1998. Glenda never married.  After Glenda retired she moved to Helena, Montana, where she began residing in the house her parents built in 1980.

Glenda occupied her time in sewing and playing Bridge.  This led to her crafting children’s outfits for the NeoNatal Care at St. Peter’s Hospital.  In July of 2008, she achieved the rank of Silver Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League.  Glenda displayed her generosity when she donated a 12 piece set of china to the Florence Crittenton Home in Helena, Montana and donations to Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska, St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota and the Tree of Life.

Glenda had a passion for reading, assembling jigsaw puzzles, crewel embroidery, sewing, playing bridge and mahjong, cooking (especially baking cakes) and, of course, watching baseball, preferably the Seattle Mariners. Glenda got her passion for cooking from the many family dinners at her grandparents’ house  during holidays and special occasions.

Glenda lived by the mantra:  “All people should be treated with respect regardless of color or beliefs.  Just because someone believes differently does not mean they cannot be your friend.”

Glenda felt very proud of her ability to complete her Associate of Arts Degree after high school.  She was even more proud of the work she contributed to the 1980 Census while detailed to the Omaha branch in Omaha, Nebraska.

Glenda is survived by Alana’s cat “Sushi” or as Glenda called her “Susie.”  Sushi adopted Glenda in the summer of 2021.  Other survivors include her Uncle Phillip Osborne of Central Point, Oregon; her brother Robert Pickett of Joplin, Missouri and her two younger sisters Beverly Pickett of Helena, and Kathleen Baker of Colorado Springs, Colorado; as well as numerous nieces and nephews from across the United States.

The family thanks the Simple Cremation staff for their care and the close friends that assisted her in her final years.

Funeral services will be held  on June 16, 2023, at Simple Cremation, 648 N Jackson St, Helena, Montana, at 1:30 PM, followed by an internment at Forestvale Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers please send donations to Father Flannigan’s Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska; St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital; or St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.
