Ernestine "Teena" Siegle Obituary

Teena Siegle, 98, of Glendive, MT, passed away in Helena, MT, of natural causes on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023. Although Teena was a Glendive native, she moved to Helena in May of 2023 to be closer to her daughter and family.

Teena was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Glendive, MT, to Ernest and Edith (Cole) Johnson, the third of 8 children living in Bloomfield, MT. Her given name was Ernestine, but she did not like people calling her that! She married William (Bill) J. Siegle on May 21, 1943. They lived in Bloomfield where Bill was the general manager of the Farmer’s Union Oil Company. They had 3 children, Janet, Diane, and Todd. When Janet passed away in 1974, Teena and Bill took in her children, Wade and Tana, and raised them with love. Along with Wade and Tana, Teena’s other grandchildren, Noelle and Brooke, visited often and the house was always filled with laughter and activity. Teena kept an efficient household and was active in the community, including being an election official at Bloomfield School on election days.

She was always going on walks and it was common to see her walking in the pastures around Bloomfield, as long as cows weren’t around! She wasn’t fond of cows, but she wasn’t afraid to kill rattlesnakes. She continued her walks well into her 90s and proudly told others that one year she tracked 241 miles around those pastures.

Bill passed away in 1982, and Teena stayed in Bloomfield until her grandchildren graduated from high school. She moved into Glendive and started working as a nurse’s aide at the Glendive Medical Center nursing home, which she loved. She worked there for many years, made countless friends, and cared for many residents. When she retired in her late 70s (once she figured out she was older than the people she was caring for, she decided it was time to retire!), she continued to be active, volunteering at the Attic, playing tambourine and spoons in the Kitchen Band, and playing pinochle with friends. She loved playing games like Scrabble and Yahtzee (and winning!), doing crossword puzzles, and watching The Game Show Network.

Teena will always be remembered for her sense of humor. She was always telling jokes. She was telling one of her favorites a week before she passed: when asked how she was feeling, she replied, “with my hands.” It was also common to hear Teena singing old hymns and silly songs while tending to her business. One word from a conversation could spark a rendition of The Old Rugged Cross or countless other songs.

One of her favorite things to do was meet up with all of her sisters and spend a long weekend with them, sharing stories and laughing. They were all so close and kept in touch as often as they could and consistently sent letters that each sibling updated and sent on to the next sibling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Janet, brother Paul, and sisters Barbara, Bessie, Geraldine, Beverly, and Jacqueline.

She is survived by her sister Patty Hendrickson, half-sister Maureen, half-brother Gregg Johnson; daughter, Diane Page of Helena, MT, and her son, Todd (Wendy) Siegle of Rapid City, SD; her grandchildren, Wade (Rachelle) Reinhardt of Billings, MT, Tana (Scott) Gordon of Austin, TX, Noelle (Joel) Watson of Billings, MT, and Brooke (John) Amestoy of Helena, MT; her great-grandchildren, Lyndsi (Jeremy) Ball of Glendive, MT, Chelsi Reinhardt of Billings, MT, Ian (Johannah) Amestoy of Helena, MT, Nicholas Amestoy of Bozeman, MT, Delaney Watson of Billings, MT, Logan Watson of Billings, MT, Max Gordon of Austin, TX, and Dex Gordon of Austin, TX; great-great-grandchildren, Blayke Hauber, Paisley Ball, Quinnli Stripling, Harley Herrera, Cameron Gambill-Mann, Chase Gambill-Mann, and Kane Amestoy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family burial will be held Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Dawson Memorial Cemetery in Glendive. Please join the family on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Yellowstone River Inn to celebrate Teena and share any stories you may have.
