David Michael Chovanak passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2023 at the age of 53. He was born on November 19, 1968 to Juanita and Andy Chovanak. He hung out with his brothers, sister and friends near Third Street, having fun and sometimes getting into mischief.
Dave graduated Helena high school in 1987 and met the love of his life at the senior all night party on the dance floor. One look, and he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. They were married two years later among family and friends.
He started skiing at age 2 in his backyard on Sugarloaf Mountain. After graduation, his passion for skiing took him to Big Sky, where he lived for two years, and Marcy joined him for the second year.
He enjoyed living up Tucker Gulch on a family plot of land that was purchased by his Grandfather. There he and Marcy, with the help of many family and friends build their home from the ground up, literally with pick axes.
After moving back to Helena he found his God-given talent to create wonderful family homes as a carpenter. His passion, pride and workmanship shined in each home. Dave was especially gifted in woodworking. One memory of his family was that he built his son’s crib on his knees after breaking both heels from a skiing incident.
Friends came easy to Dave. He was impulsive, talented and just plain fun to be around. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends or strangers. He enjoyed hiking and skiing many mountains, playing guitar, hunting birds and elk, fly fishing, and 4-wheeling with family, friends and his dogs Taz, Brindle, and Rex.
He found watching and spotting elk herds especially peaceful and relaxing. People that knew him best knew he was an “all-in” type of guy. Like the time he started to rollerblade for the first time going down hill from the top of McDonald pass.
The birth of his son Riley was the most significant and emotional event in his life. Riley at 2 years old came up with the saying I love and like you. Words of wisdom with a serious commitment. These words became our family goodbye slogan to those we cared about.
Dave is Survived by his wife Marcy of 33 years, son Riley, Father Andy Chovanak, Mother Juanita Chovanak, Sister Cathy Ransier, Brothers Dan Chovanak and Curt Chovanak with his wife Maggie.
In celebration of his life, a service will be held on January 19, 2023 at Hannaford Street Bible Church, located at 830 N Hannaford street in Helena at 11:30 a.m. with a reception after. We would love all friends and family of Dave to attend.
He is much loved by his family and friends and is so missed by everyone. We love you and like you, Dave! Donations can be sent to the humane society or Shodair Hospital.
