IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William "Bill"
Arden Mattfeldt
April 15, 1934 – January 19, 2024
William (Bill) Mattfeldt of Helena, MT passed away peacefully at The Beehive January 19, 2024. Bill was born April 15, 1934 in Harlem, Mt to Hugh and Carrie (Storkson) Mattfeldt.
Dad always told us he was named Bill because he was born on April 15. At 6 weeks old he remembers walking down the railroad tracks to Glasgow when they moved. He always had a story to tell. He was the second child in a family of 8, so there were many stories to tell.
He went to grade school in Glasgow and Hinsdale and graduated high school in Hinsdale in 1952. Bill was a milkman and then went in to trucking. He worked for North American and Garrett freight lines until he retired.
Bill had many hobbies and was always tinkering with something. Leather work, building items, wood burning to name a few. Bill volunteered at the Helena Public Library for many years. He was also senior citizen of the year in 2001.
On June 12, 1955 he married Jeanette Luraas of Barr, Mt. They had a daughter, Marcia and a son, Dan both of Helena. Bill and Jeanette were also foster parents to over 50 children over the years. Bill was also a long-time member of the Moose Lodge of Helena.
Bill is survived by his daughter Marcia (Tim) Dunlap, grandchildren Marcus Dunlap, Michelle (Dj) Smetana and twin great grandsons Jay and Carter Smetana, all of Helena. Son Dan (Val) Mattfeldt of Helena, grandson Cody (Allie) Mattfeldt, great grandsons Calen and Caleb Mattfeldt of Havre. Step grandchildren Kim, Chris, Amy and their families. Brothers Swede, Brian sisters Sharon (Mike) McDunn, Corlis (Bob) Powers, sister in law Marlys Mattfeldt, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, brothers Carl, Jim and Russ. Sister in laws Rene, Eunice and Marilyn.
