Helena, MT – Walter Douglas Copenhaver passed away in Helena on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at the age of 81. He was born in Missoula, MT on July 10, 1943 to Lawrence and Laura Copenhaver.

Walter, known to most as Wally, attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse in Ovando, MT, followed by high school at Powell County High School in Deer Lodge, MT.

Wally married Sandra Lee Short of Port Angeles, WA on September 1, 1979.

He loved the outdoors. Wally spent most of his life logging, packing in the wilderness, ranching, running a trap line, hunting, and fishing. The rest of his time was spent enjoying friends and family. His spirit will walk the mountains, lakes, and rivers.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Laura Copenhaver and brother Rod Copenhaver.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife Sandy Copenhaver of 45 years; sons Daniel Allan Copenhaver and Rickey L. Heath; siblings Eugene LeRoy Copenhaver of Puyallup, WA, Larry Copenhaver and Bruce (Jacki) Copenhaver of Missoula, MT, Barbara (Doug) Harris of Post Falls, ID, and a large network of extended family.

A celebration of life will be planned for next summer.
