Obituary

T. Wade Hampton was born on September 25, 1967, in Missoula, Montana, to an Irish woman and an Arikara man, and was adopted by H.D. and Suzy Hampton. He grew up surrounded by love and adventure, sharing a close childhood with his older brother, Andrew, and younger brother, Matthew. From an early age, Wade developed the independence, competitiveness, and curiosity that would shape his life.

Summers were a defining part of Wade’s upbringing. He spent countless days fishing at a family cottage on Crystal Lake in Minnesota, and fly fishing in the high mountains of North Park, Colorado—places that fostered his lifelong love of the outdoors, adventure, and quiet reflection. He became known as the best fisherman in the family, a title earned through both skill and patience.

Wade was a gifted athlete and fierce competitor. In high school, he set the 800-meter record, and earned numerous track medals and trophies. He carried that intensity into other sports, earning the nickname “Night Train” on the basketball court, excelling as a soccer goalie, and later finding joy and challenge in disc golf.

Beyond athletics, Wade was musically and intellectually talented. He was an accomplished piano player and a voracious reader, always eager to learn. He worked as a carpenter, taking pride in craftsmanship and creating things meant to last. He was artistic, quick-witted, and known for his sharp sense of humor. An animal lover and a deeply independent spirit, Wade left a strong impression on everyone he met.

Above all, Wade was a devoted father, brother, and friend. He shared friendships with his siblings that blurred the line between family and chosen family, and his presence was felt deeply by those who knew him best.

Wade lived a full and complex life, marked by both great strengths and personal struggles but is remembered not for those struggles, but for his talent, determination, kindness, and the love he gave and received.

Wade’s legacy lives on in the memories he created, the friendships he shared, and the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and always remembered. He is survived by his son Thomas and daughter Ellie.
