IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vivian
Manuel
May 6, 1941 – October 8, 2022
Vivian Manuel was a New Yorker born in 1941 and transplanted to Montana in 1997. She earned a Bachelor's degree from Wells College and was later a trustee on their Board. She earned a Master of Arts from the University of Wyoming in Laramie in 1965. The following year she moved to Washington, DC, and went to work for the Department of the Navy. Three years later she and a friend quit their jobs and embarked on a 3-month tour of Europe, first downhill skiing at fabled resorts like Davos, Innsbruck and Zermatt, then via Eurailpass guided by "Europe on $5 a Day." A tall strawberry blonde in Rome for Easter was quite a magnet for Italian men of all ages. Easter was celebrated a week later in the Greek Orthodox Church. Paris was memorable for student rioting that broke out on the Left Bank – tear gas, gendarmes in riot gear. From London she flew home to New York City where she worked in corporate relations for General Electric and Standard Brands, eventually founding her own private consulting firm VM Communications. She was active in several organizations for women executives in communications, always a fierce advocate for equal rights, women's rights, civil rights. Vivian indulged her love of travel at every opportunity, downhill skiing in Europe and the US, even helicopter skiing in the Bugaboos, exploring Mayan ruins in Mexico, an African safari, a train trip in India. Her Manhattan apartment had a porch where she grew flowers and tomatoes. A small kitchen produced many a meal that she shared with friends. Her parties were legendary. Her yellow lab Sundance took her on morning walks through her Upper Eastside neighborhood and Central Park. In 1997 she and Sundance moved to Helena, Montana, where she went to work as public information officer for the MT Department of Commerce. She volunteered with United Way, the American Lung Association and CASA Montana. Eventually she eased into a part time job at Home Depot where she enjoyed helping coworkers and customers. The last few years of Vivian's life were challenging as her body and mind steadily failed. At Elkhorn Health in Clancy, kind care givers helped her survive Covid-imposed isolation, a bout of Covid, shingles, a broken hip and surgery. Vivian loved her Swedish heritage, her brothers' children, her friends, her dogs, carousel horses, crossword puzzles, knitting, Paddington Bear, the NY Yankees and Roger Federer. At her request there will be no funeral. Her ashes will be scattered on a mountaintop in Wyoming. Memorial donations may be made to the Pad for Paws Foundation, PO Box 287, Helena, MT 59624 or to the charity of one's choice.
