Obituary

Steve Alan Martin, of Helena Montana died Sunday July 19, 2026 after a long decline from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 70 years old.

Steve was born to Charles (Red) Martin and Dorothy Wellens Martin in Havre, Montana on December 31, 1955. Raised on wheat and cattle ranches in Hingham and Havre MT, Steve loved nothing more than being outdoors in nature while growing up. He loved to explore along the Milk River, the badlands and prairie. He had a particular affinity with animals which led to the study of Wildlife Biology at Montana State University in Bozeman Montana where he earned both a Batchelor’s and Master’s Degree. Steve was well known in the scientific community for his study of the migration patterns of Big Horn Sheep in the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountain ranges. He worked for several ecological consulting firms and spent many years working for the State of Montana’s Fish Wildlife & Parks and the Department of Environmental Quality.

Steve was a brilliant, kind and funny renaissance man. In addition to science and mathematics that he called “the language of God”, Steve enjoyed gardening, history, art, music, camping, birding, travel, good craft beer and Scotch Whisky.

Steve is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Jean Kelley Martin, his siblings Jack Martin and Julie Martin Baldridge, his beloved nieces Lauren Ellingson, Maryl Baldridge and Shelby Baldridge, Granddaughter Laura Lysons, Great-Nephews Jett Ellingson & Matias Martinez and Great-Nieces Cameron Ellingson and Elvia Martinez. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob Martin and Sister-in-law Sharon Martin.

No formal services are planned but there will be a memorial/wake for Steve at a later date. His ashes will be scattered in his beloved mountains.
