Stephen "Steve" Scott Adams
Moore
Sep 5, 1950 — Oct 30, 2026
Helena
Stephen Scott Adams Moore ("Steve"), of Helena, Montana, died at home on October 30, 2026, with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law by his side. With strength, determination, and an unwavering spirit, he lived the last two years of his life with COPD and a neuromuscular disease that eventually wore his body down.
Steve was born on September 5, 1950, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to James Moore and Elizabeth Dunn Moore. As the youngest of six siblings, he was feisty, fearless, and full of determination. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Bismarck in 1969, he moved to Helena, Montana, to attend Carroll College. During a night out with a friend, he met his future wife, Barbara Tillo, at the Rialto. Three months later, they were married on June 15, 1974. For 52 years, they were not only husband and wife, but also each other's best friend and soulmate.
In their early years of marriage, Steve managed Bert & Ernie's Last Chance Saloon and Delicatessen before beginning a successful career in sales. Steve and Barb received their greatest gift in May 1980 when they adopted their daughter, Katie. In 1994, they moved to Vancouver, Washington, where Steve continued his career in sales with Cascade Flooring America. After retiring in 2018, he and Barb returned to Helena, where he became an integral part of his grandson's life.
Family was at the center of who Steve was. He and Barb made every effort to attend weddings and family gatherings throughout their large extended family. He especially cherished his annual fall pheasant hunting trips to North Dakota with his brother. Steve was an active volunteer in his church communities, an avid golfer, and a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan. He proudly shared that he owned one share of the team. On his last night, the Packers defeated the Panthers, and we cheered loudly, knowing he could hear us.
Not only was Steve an incredible husband and father, but he was also a devoted grandfather, beloved uncle, and lifelong friend to many. Everyone who knew Steve knew his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and genuine kindness. He was always willing to lend a helping hand while expecting nothing in return. Nonjudgmental and accepting, he welcomed people from all walks of life into his heart and home.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elizabeth Moore; his parents-in-law, Joe and Hilda Tillo; his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Ted Bredehoft; his brother-in-law, Jim Churchill; his sister-in-law, Nan Tillo; and his brother-in-law, Ron ("Hoss") Morris. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Katie (John) Burke; grandson, Cooper; siblings Pat Churchill, Dave (Marilyn) Moore, Jim (Pat) Moore, and Joe (Mary Kay) Moore; brother-in-law Joe Tillo; and sisters-in-law Carolyn (Roy) Alvstad, Terry Morris, and Lisa (Jon) Sellers.
Simple Cremation has assisted the family. Steve's Life Celebration will be held in January 2027, with a gathering of remembrance in Vancouver, Washington, in the spring of 2027. Information will be posted once final arrangements have been made.
With heartfelt gratitude, Barb, Katie, John, and Cooper thank St. Peter's Hospice, St. Peter's Health Home Oxygen, and the many healthcare providers in Helena, Bozeman, and Salt Lake City who cared for Steve throughout his journey.
In honor of Steve's memory, donations may be made to either of his two favorite Helena organizations: Food Share or God's Love.
"Grief is the price we pay for having the honor of loving someone so very much."
