Obituary

Stephen Blair Morrison, born July 22, 1956, in Helena, MT left us on February 19, 2024, after a brief illness. The Morrison family moved several times, and Steve spent most of his youth at the family home on 5th Avenue. He was proud to be a 5th generation Montanan. Steve married Laura Goodheart in 1982 and their son Quin was born in 1985.

Steve had a passion for music that started when he got his first record player as a child. Along with that record player, he started collecting LP's (albums) which ended up being a lifelong hobby. His album and CD collection was massive and breathtaking in both quantity and diversity. His knowledge of all that music and musicians was second to none. Steve was impossible to beat in music trivia. This love of music led him first to be a drummer in one of Helena's top local bands in Helena in the early 70's (Albert Flasher) and to his long career in Helena radio.

Master of the airwaves "Steve Blair" started his career at local radio station KBLL, following in his father's footsteps as a radio broadcaster. Steve left KBLL for more "rock & roll" pastures at local radio station KCAP. Steve Blair hit his stride when KCAP became KZMT-Z101 FM. Steve Blair was the friendly voice you heard every morning when you tuned in to Z101. Steve was program director at KCAP/Z101 for most of his 27 years there. Along with being one of the top radio broadcasters in Helena, his interview skills were second to none. He interviewed famous names that came through Helena, from politicians such as Ted Kennedy, to comedians George Carlin and Jay Leno, to musicians John Kay (Steppenwolf), Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Koko Taylor, and the list goes on and on.

Steve was the person who usually broke Helena's top stories such as the capture of Ted Kaczynski, the murder of Patrick Duffy's parents, the 1989 Helena train wreck, etc. But on top of all that he just loved to play the music for us. After his radio career ended on September 11, 2001, after broadcasting the terrible news of that day, Steve started a second career with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana where he was employed up until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by grandparents John and Alice Brockway and parents Blair and Jean Morrison. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 42 years, Laura, and their son Quintin (Emily), daughter Kristen, sisters Sandy Hawley (Frank), Sheri Postma (Steve), brothers Scott (Terri), Stan (Lynn), Stacy (Edwina), several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Steve is now reunited with his best friend & companion pet dog Dexter… and of course he's listening to the best music in heaven.
