Obituary

Stephen Hamilton Cade started his celestial journey with a smile on his face the evening of August 13th, 2024. His gradual decline over the last few years made life more difficult. In his lingo, the "medical years" were pretty tough! He was always a 'foot first' sort of guy and he went out on his own terms, in the house he lived in for nearly 50 years.

Steve was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on October 24th, 1944 to Hamilton and Opal (Eades) Cade. When he was young, the family lived in several locations, but ultimately settled in Independence, Kansas. He loved school and one year he made it his mission to read the entire encyclopedia - from A to Z! He graduated from high school in 1962, where he made lifelong friendships that are as strong now as they were then. He went on to the University of Kansas, becoming a Jayhawk for life. Rock chalk! Education was very important to him, so after graduating with a major in psychology, he realized that to be a psychiatrist, he needed to go to med school. He chose KU Medical Center to continue his academic pursuits. During med school, he met his "match" - a nurse from Wichita, Annette Achenbach. They married November 30th, 1968 - a mere 55 years ago. Steve graduated from medical school in 1970, and shortly thereafter began his year long Internship at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He joined the Navy during college but went on active duty in 1971. Steve was stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland, which he loved! His first son, Aaron Scott was born during his deployment. After his tour was complete, Steve began his Residency in Internal Medicine back at St.Francis. It was during this time that his second son, Ethan Tobias (Toby) was born in 1974. His love for the outdoors, hunting and fishing sparked a search for a medical practice in the northwest… landing the family in Helena, MT. (A decision he never regretted!) In 1978, the addition of a third son, Jordan Quincy completed the family. His patients and his medical practice brought such joy to his life! After his retirement, Steve continued to enjoy outdoor activities, camping, fishing, fly tying, reading, making kheema (an Indian recipe he learned from his KU roommate), woodworking, golfing, and most importantly hosting family and friends for "get- togethers". He was known to spontaneously recite poems from high school English classes and had an unparalleled memory. His larger than life personality was at the center of all gatherings and a boisterous laugh was guaranteed to accompany all of his many stories. He'll always be remembered for his witticisms, astute observations and numerous sayings.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother, Bard, who was tragically killed the week prior. His surviving family includes his wife, Annette; sons and daughter-in-laws; Aaron (Mary), Toby (Jenny), Jordan (Dana); grandchildren, to whom he was a truly GRAND father- Madeline, William, and Benjamin; Alana Maier, Cassius, and Elin. He had many friends that were like family too.

Steve would want you to live life fully, laugh, be kind, and give generously. And to quote him, "Be just what you is, not what you is not, folks who do that is the happiest lot!"

In lieu of gifts, please donate to your favorite charity. A Celebration of his Life will be held Sunday September 22nd from 2 - 4 at the Vanilla Bean 1324 Gallatin Avenue in Helena.
