Obituary

Seymour Adsem, affectionately known to all as "Herb," passed away on September 9, 2025, in Helena, Montana, at the age of 91.

Born on July 15, 1934, in Derrick, North Dakota, Herb was one of seven children of Sam and Inez Adsem. Though his twin sibling passed away at birth, Herb grew up surrounded by the love and laughter of a large family. He often reminisced about his childhood, including the unique "school bus" of his youth—a horse-drawn wagon outfitted with a small wood-burning stove. He leaves behind his sister Delores and his cherished nephew Jimmy, whose close relationship brought him great joy.

Herb attended Park River Agricultural High School, where he laid the foundation for his lifelong connection to the land and skilled trades. In 1957, he proudly joined the United States Army, where he served with distinction. As a member of the Army pistol team, he developed a passion for marksmanship and collecting—an interest that would remain with him throughout his life.

In 1958, Herb married the love of his life, Cecelia Carstensen. Together they built a life of resilience and devotion, facing joys and sorrows hand in hand. Their son, Carl, born in 1966, brought great pride but tragically passed away in 1997. Cecelia remained Herb's steadfast companion through every chapter of life.

Herb was a man of many talents and trades. Over the years, he worked as a rancher, construction worker, millwright, and welder. His craftsmanship can be seen across Montana in projects such as the Yellowtail, Swift, and Libby Dams, the Ennis Fish Hatchery, and the York Bridge. He left a lasting mark not only through steel and stone but also through the people whose lives he touched.

Known for his warm personality and boundless curiosity, Herb was a storyteller at heart. He had a natural gift for connecting with others and never missed an opportunity to share a tale, strike a deal, or trade a treasure. An entrepreneur in spirit, he found joy in hunting, fishing, gun trading, and exchanging just about anything that caught his interest.

Herb's life was defined by service, craftsmanship, and an unwavering appreciation for family, friends, and community. Among his dearest connections was the "adopted Laubach family"—Darrel and Alice, and later Dave and Mary Jo—whose enduring love and companionship became like an extension of his own family.

He will be remembered as a man who gave generously of his time and talents, a man whose laughter filled the room, and whose handshake sealed many a friendship.

Herb's legacy lives on in the stories he told, the projects he built, and the connections he fostered. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.
