Roger F. Cochlin, a highly decorated U.S. Navy veteran and retired Navy SEAL, passed away leaving behind a legacy of courage, honor, and dedicated service to his country. Born on December 17, 1946, to Roger and Kay Cochlin in Austin, Minnesota, Roger devoted 26 years to the United States Navy, serving with distinction as a Master Chief Machinist’s Mate (MMCM), Navy SEAL, Explosive Ordnance Disposal expert, Hard Hat Diver, and SERE instructor before retiring in 1992. Following his military career, he made his home in Lincoln, Montana.
After his military career, Roger worked as a hunting guide and cook for extended trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. He also worked as a cook and bartender in many establishments throughout Lincoln, Montana, where he became well known and respected within the community.
Roger earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of La Verne, as well as a Building Maintenance certificate, Small Engine certificate, and Culinary certificate from the University of Montana. Throughout his military career, he earned numerous decorations and the respect of all who served beside him.
He is survived by his sisters: Jane Brown, Maggie March, Catherine Hamblin, Patricia Winkels, and Shirley Rae Cochlin; as well as his brother, Donald Cochlin. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, John D. Cochlin and James M. Cochlin.
Graveside services and interment will be held Tuesday June 16, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at Ft. Harrison Veterans Cemetery for family and friends.
Roger will be remembered for his unwavering service, adventurous spirit, generous heart, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
