Obituary

Robert John Meismer II, Shinjuin Hozan, passed away on July 12, 2020, in Helena, Montana. He was born October 13, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, as his father was finishing dental school. The family soon moved to Billings, Montana, where Bob spent his early years biking and playing in the hills which later became West Park Plaza. He excelled in school, and was an American Field exchange student to Norway where he also explored Europe. He graduated from Billings Senior High in 1970. He attended the University of Montana as a philosophy student and returned to Europe finding his way to Greece and Turkey. He enjoyed all kinds of music from Carl Orff to Frank Zappa, traditional music from around the world to the best squak guitar. As a young man Bob had a variety of jobs, including working at The Pierce Packing Co. in Billings, and fishing for shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He served in the Montana National Guard 163rd Armored Cavalry. His strong computer skills, developed out of his philosophy studies, guided him to work at the Montana Department of Revenue and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where his creativity solved real life problems. Bob was a Warrior-Philosopher, a champion of truth and wisdom. He was a genuine outlaw and smuggler who lived by his own rules. A radical anarchist, he supported the international socialist movement and the freedom of people to move freely across borders. He lived in caves in Greece, rescued bear cubs from gypsies in Turkey, smuggled anarchists through Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, and attempted to join the Biafra Conflict, only to learn of their defeat before he could. From buckskinning in the Rocky Mountains to sailing in the Sea of Cortez, he lived the life he wanted. At Sandia Budokan he mastered Itto Tenshin Ryu Kenjitsu and Aikijutsu. A life long student of the Dharma he was a Yamabushi in Tien-Dai and Shugendo schools, which led him on pilgrimages to Japan. In his later life he spent his time on the beaches and in the mountains surrounding Bahía Concepción. He always found his way home to Montana and spent his last years with his family. After a lifetime of adventures he has departed on a new journey. Known as Montana Bob, he is survived by his son, Zen Meismer, and daughter-in-law, Kim, as well as three grandchildren, Alice, Emma, and Arthur. He is also mourned by his brothers, Steve, Mark, and Mathew, and his sister Jan Jones, and their extended families. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Virginia, and his brother Paul. To honor Bob Meismer, please plant a tree. He would have liked that.Memorial Service will be held on July 25, 2020 at his home in Helena. His son Zen Meismer can be contacted at 406-439-1417 for details.
