Obituary

Rick Alan Snyder, of Libby, Montana, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, at the age of 77.

Rick was born on October 21, 1948, in Deer River, Minnesota, to Bud and Mia Snyder. When he was 12 years old, his family moved to Montana—a place that quickly became home. From a young age, Rick loved the outdoors and could often be found riding his horse and enjoying the wide-open spaces.

Rick proudly served his country in the United States Army. Drafted in 1968, he was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas, where he worked in tactical communications. He later continued his service in the Army Reserve before returning to active duty from 1976 to 1979. During that time, Rick served as a field artillery cannon crew member with the 3rd Battalion, 34th Field Artillery and completed overseas service in South Korea from 1976 to 1977. He was honorably discharged and received the National Defense Service Medal along with multiple weapons qualification badges—honors that reflected his commitment and pride in serving.

Outside of the Army, Rick found joy in simple pleasures. He loved hunting and fishing, watching westerns, picking morel mushrooms, and spending time with family. He enjoyed collecting a variety of treasures over the years, including lights, knives, watches, vintage beer bottles, beer signs, and driftwood. Rick had a special love for his two dogs and was known for wearing his favorite pug shirt with pride.

Affectionately known as “Skippy” to his closest friends, Rick was a charter member of the Cowboy Club at the VFW. He treasured the time spent at the VFW and American Legion, where he could be found sharing laughs, stories, and good-natured teasing with friends. Rick was also generous at heart, often donating to causes that supported law enforcement, veterans, and children in need.

Rick will be remembered as stubborn in the best way, quick-witted, and fiercely loyal to those he loved. He lived life on his own terms, with humor and heart. His legacy is one of service, laughter, and a reminder to enjoy life and never take it too seriously.

Rick is survived by his children: Chad Snyder of Polson, Montana; Walter Snyder (Briana) of Libby, Montana; and Nikki Schnackenberg (Eric) of Helena, Montana; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild on the way. He is also survived by his siblings Joanne Nelson, Marjorie Snyder, Steve Snyder (Hui Su), and Ron Snyder (Cory), as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Mia Snyder; his sister, Gloria; and his brothers, Butch, Larry, and Jerry.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at the VFW in Libby, Montana.
