Obituary

Rick died peacefully at home on October 6, 2026, following a lengthy illness, which he faced with quiet courage. He was 77. Rick will be remembered as a man of integrity, intelligence, humor, passion, and warmth.

Born May 24, 1949, to Ralph W. Randall and Bernadine Uptmor Randall of Helena, Rick attended St. Helena grade school, graduated from Helena Central, and studied at Carroll College and the University of Montana, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in biology. After teaching in Browning High School he became a survey tech with BLM and later worked in the City of Helena Engineering Department. When Rick left engineering, he channeled his deep and abiding love of the natural world into his own tree pruning business.

Rick is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Hagan) Randall of Helena, by his brothers Mike (Kim) and Steve Randall (Mary Pat) and their families, both of Helena, by his dear cousins from the Morgan and LaBarre families, by the Hagan family, and by close friends Ken Varnado, Alex Isakov, Les Morgan, Frank Ritchie, Dan Pittman, Frank Pease, and many others. Rick was deeply loving, and he was deeply loved.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Bernadine, and by his brother Dan.

Rick’s loved ones extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of St. Peter’s Hospital and St. Peter’s Hospice.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
