Obituary

Patricia Ann Kiely (Haulman), 98, of Helena, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on July 5th, 2025, from natural causes. Coincidently, she had quite the send off with all of the 4th of July fireworks in the background!

Patricia was born on May 23, 1927 in Kellogg, Idaho. She was affectionately called Patsy by her dad. They moved to Butte, Montana when she was a small child so her dad could work in the mines. She graduated in 1945 from Butte High, so consequently her graduating class went through WWII, the death of FDR and Hitler, and then Germany surrendering just a few weeks before they graduated. Despite the hardships in America at the time, she said her class still managed to have fun dancing at the Columbia Gardens in Butte. Pat was a baton twirling majorette and she made history when she was voted by her class to be the very first coronation queen at Butte High. She took ballet as a child and worked as a cashier at the movie theater during high school. Later she worked for the telephone company in Missoula until she became a housewife and stay at home mom. She was the first woman promoted at Mountain Bell to be in charge of the operators and her boss was so impressed with her job performance that he allowed her to work until she was nearly 7 months pregnant, which was unheard of during that time period. She was very proud of this accomplishment.

On September 13th, 1947, Pat wed Thomas "Gus" Kiely. They were married for almost 60 years before his death in 2006. After her husband finished law school in Missoula, they moved back to Butte where they raised their 6 children, resulting in 9 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren so far. Pat has lived in Helena for the last 16 years, and before that she was in Great Falls and Billings.

She was artistic and had a lot of creative hobbies over the years. She was very talented at painting, drawing, needlepoint, and sewing, so she left quite a few masterpieces behind to be remembered by. In her younger days, she enjoyed garden club, playing bridge, swimming, and making party mix, banana bread, and methodist cookies for her grandkids. She was an avid reader her whole life, often falling asleep with a book in hand. She loved watching the news and Hallmark Christmas movies, praying with her rosary beads, discussing politics, and reading the newspaper every single morning with her coffee. She lovingly called everyone younger than her "kid", and often made the doctors and assisted living staff laugh with her witty and sassy sense of humor.

She is survived by her children Susan McKee, Sharon Niebuhr, Thomas Kiely Jr. (Judy), Steven Kiely, Janet Kiely (Tim), and Edward Kiely (Maureen); her grandchildren Dean French, Kristina French (Eric), Kiely Howard, Nicholas Howard (BJ), Shaun McKee, Brittany Moody (Joe), Nicole Salo (Cole), Linden Murphy (Colin), and Brenna Norris (Jimmy); and her great-grandchildren Jacob & Rachele French, Haley & Erika Foerster, Remington & Rowyn Howard, Ezra McKee, Emerson, Bellamy, Sullivan, & Riley Moody, Cade, Clay, & Cason Salo, Tatum & Declan Murphy, and Sloan, Sawyer, & Archer Norris.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elmer & Victoria (Sauvageau) Haulman, her brothers Bobby & Dave, and her husband Gus.

At Pat's request, there will be no services held.
