Obituary

Norman "Norm" Orville Robertson died peacefully in Helena, MT on May 13, 2024 at the age of 93. He was born to Henry and Esther (Jensen) Robertson on a farm near Westby, MT, under a bright, lucky star.

Norm grew up in Antelope, MT, where his parents owned the Antelope General Mercantile. He loved exploring the great outdoors and playing sports of any kind. Norm thrived on competition, always hoping, regardless of the score, for one more chance at bat or one more shot before the final whistle blew. His love of sports continued throughout life, albeit from the comfort of his recliner in later years.

Norm graduated from Antelope High School in 1949 and then briefly attended the University of Montana before enlisting in the Air Force in 1950 to support efforts in the Korean War.  Stationed initially at an Aircraft Control and Warning squadron on Cape Cod, he later served at a radar base in Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada. It was during this time that he married Carol (Marsh) Robertson of Plentywood, MT, and they began their journey together.

Following his honorable discharge from the military, Norm returned to the University of Montana and earned a bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences and Physical Education in 1954. He embarked on his first career as a high school teacher and coach in Valier, MT, and later in Willow Creek, MT.  As his luck would have it, his coaching debut was marked by a memorable 40-point victory.  Games that followed were not so easy, but no less exciting to the young, energetic couch. Years later, Norm transitioned to a career with the Federal Aviation Administration, where he dedicated himself until retirement.

In his free time and retirement, Norm found joy in all forms of gardening, farming, and ranching, endeavors that demanded hard work, grit and the occasional cold Miller Lite on ice. Born under a lucky star, Norm found fortune in all aspects of life, from love and family to his endeavors in raising and racing Thoroughbred horses and triumphs at the casino, often defying the odds.

Norm is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Carol (Marsh) Robertson, his five children, Kerry (Ivy) Robertson, Bruce Robertson, Randall (Polly) Robertson, Keith Robertson, and Shelly (Robert) Robertson, as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was cherished deeply by his family and friends, and his presence will be profoundly missed.   A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be sent to St Peter's Health Hospice in Norm's name, at 201 S California Avenue, Helena, MT  59601.  Simple Cremation Montana has assisted the family.
