Obituary

Mary McWhorter, aged 82, of Helena, Montana, gracefully passed away on October 31, 2025, concluding her valiant 7 year journey, with Multiple Myeloma. She was surrounded by the embrace of her adoring family.

Born on February 16, 1943, in Manchester, Connecticut, Mary Jean Pautler McWhorter was the cherished daughter of Norman Peter Pautler and Janet Mary McLeod Pautler. Her life unfolded as a tapestry of passion and dedication.

Mary's educational journey commenced at Manchester High School, where she graduated in 1961. Fueling her passion for knowledge, she pursued a degree in Elementary Education at Central Connecticut State College, culminating in a Bachelor of Science Degree. Her unwavering thirst for learning led her to the University of Maryland, where she worked toward a Master's degree in Gifted and Talented Education. She also attended the University of Washington for their Experimental Education Unit. Later, she attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana, delving into accounting and tax courses.

Upon attaining her elementary education degree, Mary embarked on a fulfilling career. Her first teaching position as a 2nd Grade teacher at Glen Haven Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland marked the inception of a several year vocation in the field of education. Mary's trailblazing spirit led her to engage in innovative projects, such as teaching experimental education at Glen Allen Elementary School in Montgomery County, Maryland. Here, she pioneered open, non-graded classroom settings that involved team teaching. This non-traditional approach was ideal for the student that needed a more alternative learning environment.

Mary's journey extended to the Helena School District (HSD) in Montana, where she became a dedicated tutor for Sylvan Learning Center, contributing to the No Child Left Behind program. In her own classroom, she worked diligently with students who were several years behind their grade levels, successfully elevating them by as much as five grade levels. She also lent her skills as a substitute teacher and aide for HSD, Intermountain Children's Home, and as a tutor for The Casey Program. Her abiding love for children and education left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.

In 1965, Mary exchanged vows with Richard Joseph Gallagher II. Their union blessed them with two children, Richard Joseph Gallagher III and Susan Margaret Gallagher. Though their paths diverged in 1975.

July 8th 1978 marked the beginning of a new chapter when Mary married Hugh Alexander McWhorter. The couple relocated from the East Coast to Helena, Montana, where they welcomed two more children, Elizabeth Mary McWhorter and Caroline Jane McWhorter.

In 1981, Mary initiated a parent support group for mothers of children with special needs in Helena, Montana. This endeavor evolved into the creation of The Farm in the Dell, a heartwarming group home and farm for individuals with special needs. Mary's legacy endures as one of the co-founders of this organization.

Mary also dedicated herself to assisting her husband, Hugh, in his CPA firm for several years, navigating the intricacies of managing the office and bookkeeping.

Mary's journey was marked by the loss of her stepson, Eric McWhorter (Kathryn McWhorter), who preceded her in death. She is survived by her devoted husband, Hugh McWhorter, her loving sister, Margaret Bernice Pautler, her son, Richard Joseph Gallagher III, and her daughters, Susan Knee (Jacob Knee), Elizabeth Gordon (Andrew Gordon), and Caroline McWhorter. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren.

In Mary's memory, we celebrate a life that was richly lived, a passion for education that illuminated the path for many, and an enduring love that will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Above all, Mary valued her role as a loving mother, leaving an unforgettable imprint of care and devotion on her children and family. Her love for her husband, Hugh, was a testament to the enduring power of love, and their bond served as a guiding light for all who were fortunate to witness it.
