At the age 7, Les vividly recalls evacuating their home during the 1935 earthquake. As a boy, Les spent many inspiring hours at his father's professional photography studio located in the grand Placer Hotel. The love of photography was passed on from father to son. Les always carried his camera with him and captured many beautiful photographs over his lifetime. In 1944, as World War II neared its end, Les joined the United States Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Seeing the world as a young man, left a huge impression on Les and he had many colorful stories of his time spent in China. After serving in the Navy, Les returned to Helena. He purchased his first family home on South Warren, as well as the historical Bluestone House ("the castle") and numerous rental properties. Les always had a great appreciation for historical buildings.A love for mining was also passed from father to son. His father owned the King Tut Silver mine near Austin, Montana. Les also had his own mining claim south of Helena, which he named the Silver Madelyn Mine. Primarily a hobby mine, Les and his family did enjoy finding even the smallest shimmer of silver!Les experienced great love in his lifetime and tried his hand at marriage. Although the relationships did not last a lifetime, the warm feelings towards his daughter's mothers, always remained strong.Les is the father of four daughters: Julie Capps, Madelyn Lyle, Juneau Davis and Cassie Greene. His daughters were the focus of his life and he always expressed great love for his girls. Les passed many of his passions for life on to his daughters.Les was a people person and could strike up a conversation with anyone! He always carried a notepad and pen in his shirt pocket and would jot down each and everyone's contact information. A common greeting from Les would be, "you're looking good kid!"In 1963, Les and his great friend, Wes Synness, set a record climbing Granite Peak. They had no climbing gear and were wearing cowboy boots. Both men had an "I can do anything" attitude and this extremely challenging climb proved them right!Les experienced success in many lines of work, which included driving a logging truck and working at Caird Engineering Works, where one of his coworkers was the country legend, Charlie Pride. He also owned and operated Rocky Mountain Radiator in Helena in the 1960's. Les moved to Butte and drove 250-ton haul trucks at the Berkeley Pit. He developed a great love for the town, people and rich history of Butte, or as Les referred to it, "Beautiful Butte America!"In 1976, Les moved to Leadville, Colorado and worked at the Climax Molybdenum Mine. With the reputation for being one of the most skilled haul truck drivers, Les trained many of the new drivers to safely operate the enormous trucks, often under adverse conditions. Les purchased and resided in the historical Leadville Pioneer Club, built in 1892. There was an amazing view of Mount Elbert and Mount Massive, from his living room window. It was not long before Les climbed both 14,000-foot peaks! In 1998, Les returned to Helena, where it all began. In his retirement, he loved watching old westerns, James Bond and many of the movie classics. Les was an avid reader and his library was as large as it was diverse. Listening to his favorite singers on his sizeable vinyl album collection, also brought him great pleasure.Les was one of a kind, not one you would not easily forget. He always wore his signature black hat, black snap-up shirt, Levi jeans and cowboy boots. A pipe or cigar was always in hand. There was nothing ordinary about this extraordinary man!
