Obituary

Kevin Paul Woodward, of Helena, MT, died peacefully in his sleep at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by his children and loving friends, on September 1st, 2025. He was 60 years old. Kevin was born on August 7th, 1965, in Gardner, MA, to Ronald Putnam (later adopted by Robert Woodward) and Carolyn Lavigne, along with his twin sister, Tracy. Kevin had a large family; he is predeceased by his parents, his sisters Ann Lammi of Winchendon, MA, Cathy Casavant of Royalston, MA, and his brother Richard Woodward of Gardner, MA. He is survived by his twin Tracy Alderson and her husband Kevin Alderson of Gardner, MA, and his brother Michael Woodward of Worcester, MA, along with a multitude of half and step-siblings, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Ran-Dell Leger of Lunenburg, MA, his daughter Brieana Woodward and her husband Al Christakis of Lunenburg, MA, and his son Alyis Woodward of Baltimore, MD. Many who knew Kevin, known as "Deed" to his children, would note his strong personality; he called it as he saw it and backed down from no one. He was as fearless as he was hilarious, has never been afraid to die, and lived life exactly as he wanted to whether those around him liked it or not. Even if he was busting your balls, many found themselves loving Kevin despite his tough spirit. He was not always easy to love, but if one took the time to understand where he came from, one could understand him. He was hit by a car as a child, and shortly after that trauma his mother remarried to his adoptive stepfather, who would brutally abuse him and his siblings. If no child took responsibility for a misdeed, Robert would line all the kids up to receive punishment, and many times Kevin would cop to whatever the issue was, even if he didn't do it, to spare his siblings whom he loved dearly. His mother would enable this treatment, so having no refuge from this environment, Kevin found himself on a long path to what outsiders considered combative and wild behavior. In hindsight, many would agree now that he was not properly taught what love and peace looked like and was simply reacting and surviving the best way he could in chaos. As he got older, he would turn to drinking and drugs to cope with his reality, which led him to many tough times and ultimately the health complications that cut his life short. He would never want anyone to look upon him as a victim though, so view him as he viewed himself: a fighter. A survivor who did the best he could with what he was given. His mindset that bolstered his resilience to the adversity he faced can be summed up perfectly by the quote tattooed on his arm, "This too shall pass." His coping mechanisms did not impede his taking care of his family however; as an adult Kevin found work in numerous ventures—he's been a cook, a limo driver, a janitor, a factory laborer in multiple industries, and eventually an entrepreneur operating as "Kevin's Odd Jobs," where he offered services from landscaping to small contracting jobs. He was never formally trained; his highest education is having completed a GED (his "Good Enough Degree" as he called it), but that did not stop him from learning and becoming skillful in many practical ways, teaching his children the important lesson of self-sufficiency. He would always refer to himself as a "jack of all trades, master of none," but anyone who had his cooking or employed his services would disagree on the latter. Kevin enriched his life with many interests and hobbies; he loved blues music, and the sounds of his favorite, Stevie Ray Vaughn, would waft through the house often. He loved a good beat too and could be found singing and dancing to songs like 'Pump Up the Jam', 'Poison', or 'Poker Face'. He was a very active person and enjoyed hiking, spending much time bringing Brieana on nature walks to nurture her love of photography, or playing catch with his sports star son, Alyis. He loved to swim in the ocean and ski on the mountains. He was always ready to have fun and loved games, whether it be playing in arcades with his kids or cards with his friends. Many a late night was spent around the dining room table with friends with stacks of quarters in the center. His absolute favorite games to play were horseshoes and pool; Kevin was in a pool league during his time in Montana and won quite a few accolades! Everything he enjoyed doing was, at its core, all about surrounding himself with friends and family and having a good time. A quote from a song by another one of his favorite bands, the Traveling Wilburys, encapsulates Kevin's life perfectly: He "wrote a long letter on a short piece of paper." There will be a private invite-only get-together in Lunenburg on September 14th, 2025, for his East Coast friends and family.
