Judith Mae
Veltkamp
November 11, 1939 – April 5, 2026
Judy Veltkamp, 86, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, with family by her side.
Judy was born and raised in Belgrade, Montana. She lived a life defined by dedication, organization, and quiet strength. She was one of the most capable and organized individuals her family had ever known—someone who could manage many moving parts at once and do so with steadiness and reliability.
She built a long and meaningful career supporting others in important roles. She worked at Montana State University, assisting both the Dean of Architecture and later the Dean of Nursing. She also served as a church secretary, where she recognized a need in her community and took the initiative to open a daycare within the church. Her professional path later included working in admissions at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, followed by a position assisting the head of missions in Honolulu. She eventually moved to Oregon, where she served as assistant to the General of The Salvation Army.
In addition to her professional work, Judy was an essential partner in her husband Harold’s ventures. Together they operated a catering business, where Harold barbecued beef and Judy prepared the full spread—potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, and desserts. Behind the scenes, Judy was the one who made it all work. Her ability to organize, prepare, and execute large events—often from a modest kitchen—was remarkable, and her contributions were central to the success of the business.
Judy was a devoted and supportive wife, consistently standing behind her husband’s ideas and efforts. She also opened her home to others, always ready with clean sheets and a meal, extending quiet hospitality to those in need. She had a way of making things happen without drawing attention to herself.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Harold; her daughter, Cindy; her sister, Patricia Graham; her brother, Larry Ross; and her parents, Tom and Bessie Ross.
Judy is survived by her daughter, Shari (Rob) Tate; her son-in-law, Scott Dickman; her niece, Susan Dickson; her grandchildren, Larissa Kennedy, Micheal Tate, and Jessica Tate; and eight great-grandchildren.
A service will be held in her honor at Canyon Ferry Baptist Church, 3384 Canyon Ferry Road, East Helena, MT on May 2nd at 2:00 p.m., with a dessert social to follow.
Her life was one of steady contribution, behind-the-scenes strength, and unwavering dedication to those she loved.
