Obituary

Harold James Veltkamp, 89, of the Gallatin Valley, Montana, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 25, 2025. He was born on August 18, 1936, in Gallatin Gateway, where he grew up surrounded by the beauty of Montana's mountains and open skies.

Harold proudly served his country in the United States Army before beginning a distinguished career with the Bozeman Police Department. Over two decades of dedicated service, he rose through the ranks and retired as Captain. Following his retirement, he continued to share his talents through woodworking, remodeling, and general handyman work. His craftsmanship produced everything from small trivets to cribs, rocking chairs, and even a dining room table large enough to seat 18, each piece made with care and love.

He found happiness in simple pleasures like fishing with his brothers and having coffee with the boys, but his greatest joy came from serving God and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Harold was all about connection, and his life of service—both in the community and in his church—stands as a testimony of faith, love, and dedication.

Together with his wife of 67 years, Judy, Harold spent many years serving as domestic missionaries for the Southern Baptist Convention, helping to build and grow churches and welcoming numerous people into their home. His faith was the cornerstone of his life. As an Arch Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church, he faithfully taught Bible studies and Sunday school classes, always eager to share his passion for the Lord. His steadfast faith and love for Jesus touched countless lives, leaving a spiritual legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Neal and Elizabeth Veltkamp; his brothers, Burton and Stan; and his daughter, Cindy Dickman. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; his daughter, Shari (Rob) Tate; his sisters, Irene DeFrance and Norma (Craig) White; three grandchildren, Larissa Kennedy, Michael Tate, and Jessica Tate; and eight great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

A memorial service will be held at Canyon Ferry Rd Baptist Church, 3384 Canyon Ferry Rd, Helena MT on September 20th 2025
