Gwendolyn Shirley Schutt Bernard from Helena, who was full of strength and determination her entire life, passed away in her sleep Friday, February 10, 2023, at the age of 93.

She was born on the family farm near Fairmount, North Dakota on October 4, 1929. After marrying Elmer "Barney" Bernard in 1953 they made their home in Helena, Montana and raised three children, Debra (James), David, and Dwight (Jane). Gwen and Barney later divorced and she remained in Helena where she worked for the Montana State Fund for 17 years.  Upon retiring, Gwen enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren: Anna (Leland), Ellen (Sam), Tyler (Elly), Chris (Crystal), Meghan (Alan), Douglas (Ashley) and Jacob (Carrie) and 14 great grandchildren. There was an adventurous side of Gwen who went to the Holy Land and while there, rode a camel. Gwen never turned down the opportunity to go camping, go on vacation, go bird watching, or look at the wildflowers.

Gwen was a hard worker, whether she was working at the office, gardening, cleaning house, singing in the choir at her church, or just taking a walk. She walked across town on a regular basis to volunteer in the gift shop at St. Peter's Hospital. Gwen stated walking was no issue for her but trekking out to Walmart was a bit far. After a stroke in 2008 she put every effort into regaining her mobility and was well-known for walking around the Beehive Assisted Living home.  Family is thankful for the care provided to Gwen at the Beehive Assisted Living.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for March 11, 2023, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 512 Logan St.  Visitation is at 10:00AM, service is at 11:00AM and lunch will follow.

Donations in Gwen's name may be made to the St. Peter's Health Hospice, who provided excellent care to Gwen.

Simple Cremation Montana has assisted the family.
