Obituary

Gloria Maxine (Thorbergson) Clark Henry, also known as Mom, Ma, Aunt Glo, Gram, Grandma & Granny, received her angel's wings in Helena, MT, on July 16, 2025, surrounded by loving family members. Gloria was 92 years young.

Gloria was born on May 27, 1933, in Fortuna, North Dakota, to Theodore and Francis Thorbergson. She had three siblings: Roland, Rachel, and Lloyd. The family later moved to Wicks, MT, where she and her siblings were raised. She attended schools in Wickes, Clancy, and Boulder, MT, where she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1951.

Since her parents would not sign papers allowing her to join the military, she got a job at Western Life Insurance in Helena, commuting daily from Wickes, just up the road from Jefferson City, after graduation. When she was 19 or thereabouts, Gloria stopped at the Clark & Son Conoco Station on the corner of Rodney and 11th Ave. Our Dad, Les Clark Sr, the attendant and lessor, asked her out on a date. She accepted, and they went out dancing at all the clubs that existed in Helena at the time! Lots of them! Although Dad was an avowed bachelor for life, already in his 30s, the love bug bit him. Mom too! And soon they were married!

Gloria (mom) and Leslie J Clark Sr. (Dad) married in 1952 and moved into a house next to his parents on Pine Street. Dad and his father gave up the lease on the Conoco Station. Les got a job at the Montana Highway Department, where he was employed as an electrical engineer, designing traffic lights around the state.Gloria and Les then moved to an HR Clack Service Station that had a residence attached, at the corner of 6th Ave and Warren, where they made many friends and loyal customers. And saved up money!

With 2 sons now (Les Jr. and Greg) and a lot more income, they ventured into the landlord business. In 1956,  they purchased the old Westside mansion at 825 Madison, which had been converted into an apartment house. This became the family's forever home. Gloria lived in and managed the apartments right up to her death.

They went on to have a total of seven children: Les Jr., Greg, Jeff, Val, Don, Jen & Phil. We lost our brother Greg to a tragic gun accident when he was 14 years old. This had a very negative effect on the family and many in the community for a long time.

Gloria lost Les Sr. in 1975 to an untimely death, leaving her with 6 kids to raise by herself, which was not an easy task!! And managed an apartment building. She did remarry for a short period of time, which is how she came to be known as Henry.

Gloria later met Bob James whom she spent the next 20-plus years doing the things she loved: camping, dancing, fishing, gardening, hunting, hiking, cross-country skiing, and traveling. She always spent lots of time with her children and grandkids, too! Bob was able to adjust, and we all came to love him too, especially for the joy and zest of living that he seemed able to bring her!

Gloria loved her family and would do anything for any of them. Her 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild had a very special place in her heart.  She somehow maintained a special relationship with everyone. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and their many accomplishments.

Gloria was one not to hold back what was on her mind, but was also quick to apologize if she knew she was wrong. She also gave second chances to many people who may not have deserved them. Gloria loved people and was very generous to those who were down on their luck.

Gloria had a large extended family, which included the Kresges, Thorbergsons, and Westovers. On the outlaw side, she had the Blackers, Clarks, Burners/Davys, Lyons, and  Schreiner families.

Gloria is survived by her children, Les Jr.-Marcia, Jeff-Carmen, Val-Dave, Don-Teresa, Jen, ex Ramie, and Phil.  She is also survived by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Gloria is preceded in death by her husband, Leslie J Clark Sr, son Gregory J Clark, her parents, and all of her siblings. She is also preceded in death by her beloved mother and father in-law Zelda & Dimitt Clark, brothers and sisters in-laws, and her long-time companion, Bob James.

Gloria loved animals, especially her fur babies!! Her little dog Jack seems quite lost right now!

Gloria had her share of illnesses over the years. By our count, it took death 3 tries to finally claim her. Her biggest complaint that she couldn't shake off was her loss of eyesight. (Macular degeneration). She was very appreciative of all who helped her during her lifetime! Her family is very Thankful for all of the medical people, including her son, Dr. Jeff, who helped her over the years, and those who attended to her at her passing into the Lord's hands.

Gloria was a member of both the St. Paul's Methodist and Presbyterian churches.

A celebration of Life for Gloria will be held on September 13, 2025, at 10 AM at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Helena, MT.
