Obituary

Eric John Fehlig was born in Helena, MT on June 18, 1952 and passed away in Helena on February 1, 2024 after battling Parkinson's disease for more than two decades. Eric spent his youth in St Louis, MO and attended Notre Dame University before returning to Montana to earn a Bachelors degree in Forestry from the University of Montana. He worked as Range Manager of the Helena National Forest and returned to the University of Montana School of Law to earn a Juris Doctor. Eric had a private law practice in Whitehall, MT and became a member of the bar in Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado before taking a position with the State of Montana.

Eric spent much of his life exploring the wild country of Montana on foot, on horseback and in 4-wheel drive vehicles and was an avid hunter and fisherman. His summer days were spent hiking the Elkhorn Mountains from the family cabin east of Jefferson City, MT.

Eric is survived by Ray Spooner, his spouse and partner of 20 years, his two sons Luke Fehlig and Kurt Fehlig, their spouses Sarah and John, and his sisters Kathy Fehlig and Karen Stiefel, all residents of Helena, and his brothers Mark Fehlig of Walnut Creek, CA and Jeff Fehlig, St Louis, MO and nieces Molly Fehlig and Meghan Mitman, her spouse Xander, and his nephew Kit Stiefel. He is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Ann "Jick" (Jacoby) Fehlig and his father Eugene Arthur Fehlig.

Cremation has taken place through Simple Cremations. A celebration of Eric's life and the spreading of his ashes will be planned when the ground is dry and the wind is high.
