Dorothy Hahn passed away peacefully from natural causes on July 26, 2021 at the Billings Clinic nursing home. She was 95. Dorothy was born to Marion and Mabel Whitten in Bussey, Iowa on August 21, 1925. She was the fourth child of seven born to the Whitten's and spent her childhood in many Iowa towns as her father worked on railroad maintenance crews. Dorothy graduated Valedictorian from Packwood high school at the age of 16. She learned hard work at an early age, delivering newspapers in Iowa blizzards and working at a grocery store, cutting meat and doing the owner's wife's housework when business was slow. Dorothy came to Townsend, MT to visit an aunt and met the love of her life, Paul Hahn. They were married on September 7, 1946, had three children, Bev, Chuck, and John and had the perfect marriage.Paul and Dorothy ranched in the area where Canyon Ferry Lake is now, at the end of what is now Hahn Road north of the Silos. Their beautiful ranch was flooded out in the period of 1948 -1954 by the new Canyon Ferry Lake, relocating to the current ranch site two miles south of Townsend. Dorothy loved helping Paul, even with the long hours, at haying, calving, lambing, taking care of livestock, three children and making meals. Dorothy also loved her chickens, keeping 200-300 around, running a weekly egg route. This was her social time, visiting with each and every loyal customer. She also loved to hunt, harvesting many a deer and elk with her trusty 30-30 Winchester and many grouse with her .410 shotgun, boasting two with one shot a few times. Spending time at our cabin, camping and fishing, added to her roster of activities also. Later in life, Dorothy was very active in fundraisers, baking pies and goodies for many worthy events, so many in fact that she was affectionately known as the "Pie Lady". She baked many an apple turnover and cookies for the athletic teams traveling to out of town games, spending many late hours accomplishing this for her "kids". Dorothy rarely missed a ball game and was honored by the school for her service and devotion. She was the hit of countless variety shows and Cattlewomen skits, amazing the audience with her risqué routines. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist church, also a charter member of the Broadwater Cowbelles, now known as the Cattlewomen and numerous other organizations. Even later in life, though she was much older, considerable time was spent after church socializing with the "old" people in all the rest homes and nursing home.Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul (1982), four brothers and a sister. Surviving are her youngest brother Jack (Pat) Whitten of Iowa, daughter Beverly (Jim) Bird, sons Chuck and John (Tamie) Hahn, grandsons Cory (Jennilee) Bird, Dusty and Buck Hahn, granddaughter Caitlyn Hahn, all of Townsend, grandson Eric (Sarah) Bird, of Republic, WA, step grandson Delmar (Heather) Karnes of Bozeman, step granddaughter Tonya (Scotty) Wren of Helena, seven great grandsons and granddaughters, numerous nieces and nephews, David (Linda) Etzwiler, Homer, AK, who considered Dorothy as his mom and us as family since high school, and many close friends.
