David Stephen
Buchanan
Jul 13, 1962 — Nov 1, 2026
Helena
David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother who passed away after a life defined by steadfast commitment to family, integrity, and hard work. Born on July 13, 1962, in Evergreen Park, Illinois to Raymond and Rita (Kozub) Buchanan, David carried the values of his Midwestern upbringing with him throughout his life.
A proud 1984 graduate of Texas A&M University and member of the Corps of Cadets, David embodied the Aggie spirit - loyal, disciplined, and always ready to serve. He built a remarkable 40-year career in the construction industry, earning the respect of colleagues through his leadership, expertise, and unwavering work ethic.
In 1989, David married Karen, his soulmate and life’s companion. Together they created a family rooted in faith, adventure, and resilience. Their journey took them across six states; each move shaping new chapters filled with memories, friendships, and the deep sense of home they built wherever they landed.
David found joy in the simple, steady pleasures of life. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, cheering them on with the kind of optimism only a true Cubs fan can muster. Aggie football brought him pride and excitement even when the season tested his patience. He loved the quiet peace of fishing and found satisfaction in his woodworking creations.
Above all, David was deeply proud of his sons, Gary and Michael. Their character, their kindness, and the lives they’ve built were among his greatest joys.
David is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, Gary and Michael (Jenna); grandchildren, John and Ila, with whom he loved spending time these past few years; mother, Rita; brother, Dan (Michelle); sister, Diane (Scott); brother-in-law Bill (Kelly), and sister-in-law Kelly (Todd). He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Raymond.
His steady presence, gentle humor, and unmistakable smile earned him the nickname “Happy Dave,” a name that captured his spirit perfectly. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and just enough wit to keep everyone smiling through the tears.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dave’s memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of St. Helena on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 12 noon with a reception at the Brondel Center immediately following.
