Cullen Edward Meyer, 78, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours ofWednesday, September 30. Cullen was born to Walter and Janice Meyer in Elgin,Illinois. His childhood was spent in Barrington, Illinois, a suburb in northwestChicago, and its public schools. He was the first of four children. In 1946 at agefour, Cullen was diagnosed with poliomyelitis, prior to the polio vaccine whichbecame widely distributed to children in the mid-1950s. He played basketball,baseball and lettered in football in both high school and college~~quite amazingfor a child whose parents were told in 1946 that he would neither walk nor run.Cullen graduated from Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, part of theChicago metropolitan area where he received his BA degree in 1964. Hiseducation continued at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where hereceived his MBA in 1966.After his education, Cullen attempted to enlist in the U.S. military but wasdisqualified due to medical conditions. He then pursued business where he wasemployed by Johns-Manville as an industrial engineer at its asbestos plant inWaukegan, Illinois. In 1972 he and his family moved to Denver, Colorado, wherehe worked in Information Technology in both the Fiberglass and InternationalDivisions both at the Johns-Manville Headquarters in the Red Rocks west ofDenver through 1987.In 1981 he married Lorna Carlson formerly of Conrad, MT, living in Denver at thetime. In October 1988 Cullen accepted an offer from Bell & Howell Phillipsburg inthe Lehigh Valley of PA, about 55 miles northwest of Philadelphia, where heworked as Information Technology Manager for Sales and Service whichmanufactured mail inserting machines until January 1995. His career led him to computer consulting until he then joined Precision RollGrinders in Allentown, PA, as Information Technology Manager in 2000. InNovember 2009 he retired from Precision Roll Grinders. This was an opportunityfor Cullen to relate to juniors and seniors in high school along with studentspursuing their college degrees. Since education was very important to him, he notonly allowed these young students to have hands on business experience in ITbut at the same time enjoyed what he had learned from each of them. Both of hisparents also had college degrees.In September 2017 Cullen and Lorna moved from Pennsylvania to Helena, MT,where they have resided since.Throughout his life Cullen was an avid golfer, bowler, reader (with a goal ofreading 30 books most years), lifetime learner, Bible study leader in small(Koinonia) groups in both Denver and in PA. He loved music both listening to andsinging having sung in his church choir in PA for many years; flower gardening,especially Jackson-Perkins roses, bulbs, plus vegetable gardening. Cullen was amember of the Civil War Roundtable of Eastern PA. They traveled to many of theCivil War Battlefields and Presidential libraries in the last ten years and to manyhistorical sites east of the Mississippi during their residency in PA.Cullen was predeceased by his parents; sister, Carol Taggart, and two brothers-inlaw. He is survived by his wife Lorna of 39 years; daughter Heather, of Withee,Wisconsin, and son Ross of Bellingham, WA, by a prior marriage; sister, GailPytel, of Kent, Ohio; brother, Kent (Debbie) Meyer of Henderson, Minnesota;nieces and nephews. He was a very loving, caring father to his children as hewas to his wife. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.The memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at Our Redeemer's LutheranChurch in Helena, Montana, at 3580 Benton Ave., October 16, 2020 at 2 p.m. withmasks and social distancing required. There will be no reception following theservice. Remembrances can be made in Cullen's honor to Our Redeemer'sLutheran Church.
