Obituary

Charles Henry Sprague, Jr. (Chuck), passed away peacefully at home on January 29, 2021, at the age of 80. Chuck was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on October 7, 1940, to Evelyne and Charles H. Sprague, Sr. He spent his younger years in Nebraska before the family moved to Los Angeles, California. He married Sharon Moose and they had two daughters, Elizabeth (Liz) and Susan. Chuck worked in a variety of jobs before becoming a mechanic for Otis Elevator. After a trip to Montana in the Sixties, he moved his family to Helena, where he serviced elevators in Helena and the surrounding area for two decades. During this time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and he took up sapphire mining and built a home in the mountains northeast of Helena. He and Sharon divorced in 1986. In 1988, he and his partner, Paulette, moved to Juneau, Alaska, where he serviced elevators in southeast Alaska until retiring from Otis in 1995. During their seven years in Alaska, he enjoyed trapshooting and participated in annual shoots in Carcross, Canada. He excelled at everything he did, and was an excellent teacher and mentor. While in Juneau, he enrolled in carpentry class at the university's fully equipped wood shop, and occasionally found himself teaching the class when the teacher was absent. Chuck was skilled at faceting gemstones and produced gorgeous gems which he gave to family and friends. He happily shared this talent by teaching others to facet. He learned to pilot an airplane but health issues prevented him from pursuing that. He loved woodworking and building model trains and airplanes and collected kits and magazines related to these hobbies . Upon his retirement, Chuck and Paulette returned to his mountain home in Montana, where he pursued model building, sapphire mining, trap shooting, faceting, and other interests . Chuck was an accomplished carpenter and skilled in all aspects of construction. For a time, he helped install kitchen cabinets for Larry Palmer Cabinets and often helped friends with assorted remodeling and other projects. He was a perfectionist in everything he did, had lots of friends, and was happy to lend a hand wherever needed. In 2018, after 30 years together, Chuck and Paulette finally decided to get married. Chuck is survived by his wife, Paulette, daughters Liz Galgerud (Scott) and Susan Clark (Dave), step-children Jay Duncan (LueRonda) and Leslie Fisher (Wade), four grandchildren, Shannon Taylor (Kade), Sunny Burdick (Kipp), Amy Dominick (James) and Andrew Peck (Kayla); and six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jakeb and Shea Thronson; and Lily, Litie, and Russel Burdick.A celebration of Chuck's life will be held at a later date.
