IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carol J
Robertson
December 25, 1932 – December 1, 2024
Carol (Marsh) Robertson passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones in Helena, MT. She was 91 years old. Born on Christmas day, December 25, 1932, in Scobey, MT, to Frank and Eugenia Marsh, Carol was the youngest of 11 children. Her siblings lovingly chose the name "Carol", inspired by the Christmas carol.
Carol spent her early years in Scobey, where her parents were farmers. During the challenging times of the Great Depression, the family relocated to Plentywood, MT, in search of better opportunities. In the "big city" of Plentywood, Carol thrived, making new friends and taking on responsibilities such as babysitting and working at local retailers and the movie theater. From an early age, she embraced hard work and the importance of community.
In 1953, Carol married Norman Robertson, who was enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. The young couple initially lived in Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada, where Norm was stationed, before returning to the United States. They moved frequently, living in various places in Montana, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Regardless of their accommodations—often rustic or modest—Carol always transformed each place into a welcoming home. Together, she and Norm raised five children, four sons and one daughter.
In 1970, the family settled in East Helena, MT, where Carol began working at the local grade school. As with many women in her time, she was a pioneer as a "working mom", juggling home and work life with grace. Starting as the principal's secretary, she eventually became secretary treasurer, a position she held until her retirement in 2001. In 1973, Carol and Norm built their dream home—a small ranchette on Spokane Creek. A true Montana girl at heart, Carol cherished their country home. Although her job kept her busy, she always made time for family gatherings and memorable holiday celebrations.
Carol had an immense love for children, whether they were her own children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or the kids in their small Montana town. She had a talent for baking and she must have made as many cookies in her lifetime as there are stars in the sky. She was a devoted mother, wearing a unique hat to connect with each of her children. Carol expressed her love through the food she prepared, often making multiple versions of a dish to satisfy her apparently picky eaters. She was the epitome of a loving and caring mother.
Carol is survived by her five children: Kerry (Ivy Crawford) Robertson, Bruce Robertson, Randall (Polly Parr) Robertson, Keith Robertson, and Shelly (Robert Heinzen) Robertson. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Carol was deeply loved by her family and friends, and her absence will be profoundly felt.
The family would like to thank Simple Cremation Montana for their support. A celebration of Carol's life will be announced at a later date.
