IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bobby "Bob"
D Wing
April 27, 1948 – July 16, 2022
Bobby "Bob" Wing sadly passed after a short battle with lung cancer on Saturday July 16, 2022. He died peacefully at his home in Helena, MT. A celebration of life will be held at Terry Wing's on Saturday July 23, 2022. Bob will be remembered as a father, family member, and friend. Many of the friends were considered family, and his loss will be felt by many.
Bob was born in Shelby, MT on April 27, 1948 to Claude Melvin "Mel" Wing and Hattie Mae Wing (Ostby). He grew up on the family farm in Sweetgrass, MT before being politely asked to leave town. He landed with his brother Terry Wing to finish high school in Whitefish, MT. Bob followed Terry to Portland, OR and it was there that he met Kathryn "Kathy" Rutledge. They married on May 2, 1970 in Portland and their honeymoon was on the road to Pablo, MT where they settled for a short time and welcomed their first daughter, Christine "Christy" Wing. Bob had become friends with Bobby Merganthaler, and a job opportunity took them to Helena, MT to work for Merganthaler Moving and Storage. The following year they had Charles "Charlie/Chuck" Wing and five years later Leanne Wing.
Bob worked at Merganthaler's for years and made many friends, including his life long buddy, Mirl Muchmore. A knee injury forced him to leave Mergenthaler's and he embarked on many different jobs over the years. He drove truck, was a mechanic, and eventually started a fencing business with his brother Terry. Bob expanded his horizons and went on many trips with friends and family. He hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, went to Costa Rica, Mexico, and Greece as well as numerous hikes throughout Montana. Many of his last winters were spent by Eloy, AZ where he and Mirl would stay busy with friends, new and old.
While Bob and Kathy had divorced, we commonly joked that Terry was his second wife, because they would bicker like an old couple. The two brothers were life-long companions and close to the very end. His York Road house was a mecca for guests, and his nephews Tory and Jeremiah "Miah" lived and worked with him for many years. They were like sons to him, and he always appreciated them in his life.
Bob was a simple man, but he was handy and hard working, and present for all that knew him. You could always count on Bob when you needed a hand, and sometimes without even asking. He had a big heart and cared for those around him. A goodbye was often accompanied with a big hug and "I love you" and sometimes a little misty eye. He is survived by a large family, and many that referred to him as Uncle Bob. His children loved him dearly, and are grateful for all those in his life. You made his life full, and that is all one can ask for.
Many of you will have stories to share, and we would love to hear them at Terry and Dorothy's on Saturday July 23, 2022. The stories will start flowing at 4pm. There will be food and drinks, but if you think you can cook, feel free to bring a dish. Bob always loved a good meal. We also suggest bringing chairs. It should be a beautiful day under a Montana sky. In lieu of flowers, please think up or write down a favorite story of Bob for the family to keep!
