Obituary

Bev drifted away on a beautiful blue sky day on Friday, December 16 at the age of 93 and a half years old after living a very full and interesting life. She continued to have a deep interest in her community, friends, and family through her last weeks.

She was born in Visalia, California on July 10, 1929 to Agnes Marie Mehring, a teacher, and Felix Roy Davis, a court reporter. After losing the family home during the depression the family moved to Los Angeles and then Bakersfield, California. In summertime to save money the family joined hundreds of others who camped in farmer's fields and on the beach, which in Bev's memory was quite the adventure. In second grade she was sent to the Keen Preventorium in the Tehachapi Mountains for a year. The idea was to prevent vulnerable children from contracting tuberculosis. After the death of her father when she was 11, she and her mother packed up the Hudson and moved to Oregon and settled in Newport. Mother and daughter spent many hours walking the beach discovering agates and shells and Japanese glass floats. She enjoyed riding her horse on the beach with her lifelong friend Taffy Altree and made many lasting friendships. The beach continued to be a favorite destination throughout her life.

Bev graduated from Newport High School in 1947 as valedictorian of her class. She went on to study forestry at Oregon State College, until in 1950 she married Kenneth Gibson. They moved from Oregon to Havre, Montana and became very involved in the ski community and spent many years camping and hiking. Eventually they settled in Helena. They had 3 daughters, Lori Moore (Dan) of Helena, Celia Styren (Mike) of Bozeman, and Priscilla Gibson of Eugene, Oregon.

Bev's professional interests revolved around journalism, advertising, and association management. She was a reporter and columnist for the Havre Daily news. In Helena she worked for Judge Advertising, the Montana Highway Department's Public Information Office, and later as the Assistant Director for the Montana Association of Counties. She so enjoyed her career that she waited until age 70 to retire. Additionally she enjoyed volunteering with several community organizations such as the Helena symphony, Civic Center, Mikal Kellner Foundation for Animals, Myrna Loy Theater, Last Chance Press Club, Montana Association for the Blind, and the Montana Club.

Bev's zest for life had her taking French classes, auto mechanics and playing badminton. She was a prolific photographer, traveled far and wide and loved sharing stories of her experiences. She was an animal lover extraordinaire, enjoying a life enriched with cats, dogs, and horses and dearly loved watching the Montana wildlife. She took great pleasure in admiring and supporting the wonderful visual and performing arts community in Helena.

She is predeceased by her parents, her two half brothers and many dear friends. Her daughters and sons in law survive her as well as many beloved friends.

Margaret Woo, Dodie Colberg, Sandy and Denny Zeiler, Jade Knight, Norma Jean Boles, Barb Harris, Marie McAlear, Nikki Andersen, the Altree family, Jeanne Glasscock, Imogene Hanson, Pat Seiler, Maret and "Hutch" Hutchinson, her Young at Heart group from Crossroads Fitness, the Red Hat Society, Mended Hearts, and the fine people at St. Peter's "cardio" rehab, are among many who graced Mom's life and remain beloved to Bev and her family. In her memory we aim to live life with Mom's enthusiasm, strength, joy and curiosity and hope that you will too. We will gather to celebrate her life with family and friends on Monday, July 10th, 2023 from 3-5:30 PM at the Delta "Colonial" Hotel.

Special thanks to Julie Street, R.N., Lisa and Dave Schmitz, the wonderful staff at Lisa's in-home senior assistance, Lavinder home health, the staff from St. Peter's hospice, and Marita Messick for their extra special kindnesses and attention.
